90 years advancing baby nutrition

Important advice to mothers

The best way to feed a baby is to breastfeed, as breast milk provides the ideal balanced diet and protection against illness for your baby and also many non-nutritional benefits for both baby and mother. We recommend that you speak to your healthcare professional when deciding on your choice of feeding your baby. Professional guidance should also be sought on the preparation for and maintenance of breastfeeding. If you do choose to breastfeed, it's important to eat a healthy, balanced diet.

Infant formula is intended to replace breast milk when mothers choose not to breastfeed or if for some reason they are unable to do so. A decision not to breastfeed, or to introduce partial bottle-feeding, will reduce the supply of breast milk.

If for any reason you choose not to breastfeed, do remember that such a decision can be difficult to reverse. Using infant formula also has social and financial implications which must be considered. Infant formula should always be prepared, used and stored as instructed on the label, in order to avoid risks to a baby's health.

When introducing weaning foods, remember that they need to be suitable and safe, and fed appropriately to minimise any risk to your baby's health.

The pages ahead and other subsequent communications we may have with you provide you with information on infant feeding and SMA Nutrition products, including infant formula.

Important advice to mothers

Breast milk is best for babies and breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible. SMA® Follow-on Milk is only suitable for babies over 6 months as part of a mixed diet. It should not be used as a substitute for breast milk during the first 6 months. The decision to start weaning or to use this product before 6 months, should be made only on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist, based on babies individual needs.

Important advice to mothers

SMA Toddler Milk® is suitable for young children 1-3 years and it is not a breast milk subtitute. Breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible. Do not allow prolonged or frequent contact of milk with your toddlers teeth, as this increases the risk of tooth decay. Ask your health care professional or dentist for advice.

The only* soya-based infant formula for babies and infants who are intolerant to cows' milk

Some healthy babies can experience intolerance to cows’ milk. The signs of cows’ milk intolerance can include colic and abdominal pain, diarrhoea, poor weight gain and eczema. If you think your baby could be cows’ milk intolerant it’s best to get the guidance of your GP.

SMA® Wysoy Soya Infant Formula benefits from over 90 years of experience in advancing baby nutrition and is a nutritionally complete formula for babies and young children who are intolerant to cows’ milk, when they are not being breastfed. It can be used as the sole source of nutrition in the early months and for older babies and young children it can be used in place of the milk as part of a mixed diet. As it is soya based it is suitable for milk protein intolerance, lactose and sucrose intolerance, galactosaemia and galactokinase deficiency. Consult a healthcare professional before first use and dietary advice.

Halal approved and Vegetarian Society approved.

Why SMA Wysoy?

Nutritionally complete tailored formula

SMA Wysoy Soya Infant Formula is scientifically developed to meet the specific nutritional needs of babies with cows’ milk protein intolerance. It is nutritionally complete as the sole source of nutrition up to 6 months and then can be used as part of a healthy weaning diet.

Omega 3 & 6 LCPs (Long Chain Polyunsaturates)

Although LCPs can be made in the body, babies have a high demand for these nutrients. SMA Wysoy Infant Formula contains Omega 3 & 6 LCPs to help ensure bottle-fed babies aren't missing out on these important nutrients.

The only* soya-based infant formula for babies and infants who are intolerant to cows' milk

Compared to other formulas the protein component of this formula is soya, making it suitable for babies and young children who are intolerant to cows’ milk protein. It is nutritionally complete and can be used for older babies in food as part of a weaning diet.

Preparing your baby’s feed

Whilst SMA products are made under strict hygienic conditions, they are not sterile. Failure to follow instructions on preparation and storage may make your baby ill.

  1. Wash hands well. Sterilise all utensils according to manufacturers’ instructions. After 6 months, if you are using a beaker it is not necessary to sterilise equipment, though you should ensure everything is fully cleaned.
  2. Boil 1 litre of fresh tap water. Allow boiled water to cool for now more than 30 minutes. Measure the required amount of water (see feeding guide on can) into a sterilised bottle or clean beaker, carefully – the water is hot. Do not use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water.
  3. Using the scoop provided in the can, add the correct number of scoops of powder (see feeding guide on can), levelling off each scoop with the back of a clean dry knife. Replace plastic lid on can.
  4. Place the sterilised teat and cap on the bottle or lid on the beaker and shake well. Cool bottle or beaker under cold running water until lukewarm. Test temperature by shaking a few drops on to the inside of your wrist.

If advance preparation is necessary, consult your healthcare professional.

This table is a guide only. Babies, just like the rest of us, have different appetites and they change as time goes by, so your baby may need more or less than the volumes stated. If you require more advice about feeding, speak to your healthcare professional. Remember to feed your baby on demand.

Storing and using formula

Ideally a powdered formula feed should be made up as and when you need it. However, sometimes, preparation in advance is necessary, for example, when taking your baby to nursery. If this is the case speak to your healthcare professional for guidance or call the SMA Careline team on UK: 0800 0 81 81 80 ROI: 1800 931 832

When reheating a beaker or bottle never leave it warming for more than 15 minutes. Warm the feed in a bottle warmer or place in a container of warm water. Don’t use a microwave to warm a bottle or beaker as it unevenly heats the feed and may burn your baby’s mouth. Shake the bottle or beaker before giving it to your baby so there are no hot spots and remember to always test the temperature on your wrist first too. If it feels hot, it’s too hot for your little one.

Do not add extra powder or water to make the feeds stronger or weaker and do not press the powder into the scoop. Using too much or too little powder could make your baby ill. Remember to throw away any feeds that have not been used within 2 hours. Made up milk can be poured over cereals or mixed with food, however never add any food to the milk in your baby’s beaker/bottle.

Suitable for babies, children and adults.
For enteral use only.

Attention

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Breastfeeding is best for babies. Good maternal nutrition is important for the preparation and maintenance of breastfeeding. Introducing partial bottle-feeding may have a negative effect on breastfeeding and reversing a decision not to breastfeed is difficult. You should always seek the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist on the need for and proper method of use of infant formulae and on all matters of infant feeding. Social and financial implications should be considered when selecting a method of infant feeding. Infant formulae should always be prepared and used as directed. Inappropriate foods or feeding methods, or improper use of infant formula, may present a health hazard. SMA Wysoy milk-free formula is intended to meet the nutritional needs of babies and children who are intolerant to cows’ milk protein, lactose or sucrose. Soya infant formulae are not recommended for preterm babies or those with kidney problems, where medical guidance should always be sought.
