90 years advancing baby nutrition

Important advice to mothers

The best way to feed a baby is to breastfeed, as breast milk provides the ideal balanced diet and protection against illness for your baby and also many non-nutritional benefits for both baby and mother. We recommend that you speak to your healthcare professional when deciding on your choice of feeding your baby. Professional guidance should also be sought on the preparation for and maintenance of breastfeeding. If you do choose to breastfeed, it's important to eat a healthy, balanced diet.

Infant formula is intended to replace breast milk when mothers choose not to breastfeed or if for some reason they are unable to do so. A decision not to breastfeed, or to introduce partial bottle-feeding, will reduce the supply of breast milk.

If for any reason you choose not to breastfeed, do remember that such a decision can be difficult to reverse. Using infant formula also has social and financial implications which must be considered. Infant formula should always be prepared, used and stored as instructed on the label, in order to avoid risks to a baby's health.

When introducing weaning foods, remember that they need to be suitable and safe, and fed appropriately to minimise any risk to your baby's health.

The pages ahead and other subsequent communications we may have with you provide you with information on infant feeding and SMA Nutrition products, including infant formula.

Important advice to mothers

Breast milk is best for babies and breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible. SMA Follow-on Milk is only suitable for babies over 6 months as part of a mixed diet. It should not be used as a substitute for breast milk during the first 6 months. The decision to start weaning or to use this product before 6 months, should be made only on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist, based on babies individual needs.

Important advice to mothers

SMA Toddler Milk is suitable for young children 1-3 years and it is not a breast milk subtitute. Breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible. Do not allow prolonged or frequent contact of milk with your toddlers teeth, as this increases the risk of tooth decay. Ask your health care professional or dentist for advice.

The 200 ml carton on-the-go format now includes a new straw that has a closed end but with three little holes around the side so they get the milk more evenly in the mouth. This can help toddlers learn to drink on their own.

Why SMA Toddler Milk?

Specially tailored combination of nutrients for toddlers

SMA Toddler Milk contains key vitamins and minerals. It is a specifically tailored combination of nutrients for toddlers, including vitamin D for normal growth and the development of bones, iron for cognitive development, as well as Omega 3 & 6. SMA Toddler Milk can be used to help ensure your toddler gets all the nutrients they need as part of a healthy balanced diet.

Fortified with vitamin D for bone development and iron to help normal cognitive development

Two servings of SMA Toddler Milk provides up to 86% of your Toddler’s recommended daily intake of vitamin D. It is very important for toddlers to have enough vitamin D in particular, because it is needed to support the rapid growth and development of bones in their early years.

Omega 3 & 6 LCPs (Long Chain Polyunsaturates)

LCPs are important components of cell membranes and play a key role in the development of the brain, eye, and nervous system. Although LCPs can be made in the body, toddlers have a high demand for these important nutrients and it's recommended they form part of their diet.

This table is a guide only. Babies, just like the rest of us, have different appetites and they change as time goes by, so your baby may need more or less than the volumes stated. From 1 year you should try to ensure your baby has 400 ml of SMA Toddler Milk per day, either as a drink, on cereals or mixed with food. You can feed your toddler up to 3 servings per day depending on their individual nutritional needs. If you require more advice about feeding, speak to your healthcare professional.

Storing and using formula

Ideally a powdered formula feed should be made up as and when you need it. However, sometimes, preparation in advance is necessary. If this is the case speak to your healthcare professional for guidance or call the SMA Careline team on UK: 0800 0 81 81 80 ROI: 1800 931 832. Alternatively use ready-to-use liquid Toddler Milk, available in 1 litre and 200 ml cartons.

When reheating a beaker never leave it warming for more than 15 minutes. Warm the feed in a container of warm water. Don’t use a microwave to warm a beaker as it unevenly heats the feed and may burn your toddler’s mouth. Shake the beaker before giving it to your toddler so there are no hot spots and remember to always test the temperature on your wrist first too. If it feels hot, it’s too hot for your little one.

Do not add extra powder or water to make the feeds stronger or weaker and do not press the powder into the scoop. Using too much or too little powder could make your toddler ill. Remember to throw away any feeds that have not been used within 2 hours. Made up milk can be poured over cereals or mixed with food, however never add any food to the milk in your baby’s beaker.
