90 years advancing baby nutrition

Important advice to mothers

The best way to feed a baby is to breastfeed, as breast milk provides the ideal balanced diet and protection against illness for your baby and also many non-nutritional benefits for both baby and mother. We recommend that you speak to your healthcare professional when deciding on your choice of feeding your baby. Professional guidance should also be sought on the preparation for and maintenance of breastfeeding. If you do choose to breastfeed, it's important to eat a healthy, balanced diet.

Infant formula is intended to replace breast milk when mothers choose not to breastfeed or if for some reason they are unable to do so. A decision not to breastfeed, or to introduce partial bottle-feeding, will reduce the supply of breast milk.

If for any reason you choose not to breastfeed, do remember that such a decision can be difficult to reverse. Using infant formula also has social and financial implications which must be considered. Infant formula should always be prepared, used and stored as instructed on the label, in order to avoid risks to a baby's health.

When introducing weaning foods, remember that they need to be suitable and safe, and fed appropriately to minimise any risk to your baby's health.

The pages ahead and other subsequent communications we may have with you provide you with information on infant feeding and SMA Nutrition products, including infant formula.

Important advice to mothers

Breast milk is best for babies and breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible. SMA Follow-on Milk is only suitable for babies over 6 months as part of a mixed diet. It should not be used as a substitute for breast milk during the first 6 months. The decision to start weaning or to use this product before 6 months, should be made only on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist, based on babies individual needs.

Important advice to mothers

SMA Toddler Milk is suitable for young children 1-3 years and it is not a breast milk subtitute. Breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible. Do not allow prolonged or frequent contact of milk with your toddlers teeth, as this increases the risk of tooth decay. Ask your health care professional or dentist for advice.

Why SMA Follow-on Milk?

Fortified with iron to help normal cognitive development

Iron is very important for growth and brain development. SMA Follow-on Milk is fortified with iron to help normal cognitive development.

Contains Calcium and Vitamin D for bone development

Vitamin D helps to keep bones healthy by helping the body absorb calcium from the foods babies eat. It’s very important for babies to have enough Vitamin D, because it is needed to support their rapid growth and development in their early years of life.

Omega 3 & 6 LCPs (Long Chain Polyunsaturates)

LCPs are important components of cell membranes and play a key role in the development of the brain, eye, and nervous system. Although LCPs can be made in the body, infants have a high demand for these nutrients and they can be difficult to obtain from a weaning diet. SMA Follow-on Milk contains Omega 3 & 6 LCPs to help ensure weaning babies aren't missing out on these important nutrients.

Preparing your baby’s feed – powders

Whilst SMA products are made under strict hygienic conditions, they are not sterile. Failure to follow instructions on preparation and storage may make your baby ill.

  1. Wash hands well. After 6 months of age, if you are using a beaker it is not necessary to sterilise equipment, though you should ensure everything has been fully cleaned. If you are using a bottle and teat, sterilise all utensils according to manufacturers’ instructions.
  2. Boil 1 litre of fresh tap water. Allow boiled water to cool for no more than 30 minutes. Measure 180 ml (approx. 6 fl. oz.) of water into a beaker or bottle, carefully – the water is hot. Do not use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water.
  3. Using the scoop provided in the can, add 6 scoops of powder, levelling off each scoop with the built-in levelling bar inside the can (900 g only) or with the back of a clean dry knife. Close lid on can.
  4. Place a lid on the beaker or a sterilised teat and cap on the bottle and shake well. Cool beaker or bottle under cold running water until lukewarm. Test temperature by shaking a few drops on to the inside of your wrist.

If advance preparation is necessary, consult your healthcare professional.

This table is a guide only. Babies, just like the rest of us, have different appetites and they change as time goes by, so your baby may need more or less than the volumes stated. From 6 months to 1 year you should try to ensure your baby has 500 – 600 ml of SMA Follow-on Milk per day, either as a drink, on cereals or mixed with food. If you require more advice about feeding, speak to your healthcare professional.

Storing and using formula

Ideally a powdered formula feed should be made up as and when you need it. However, sometimes, preparation in advance is necessary, for example, when taking your baby to nursery. If this is the case speak to your healthcare professional for guidance or call the SMA Careline team on UK: 0800 0 81 81 80 ROI: 1800 931 832. Alternatively use ready-to-use liquid Follow-on Milk, available in 1 litre bottles and 200 ml cartons. Remember to take a beaker/bottle and a pair of clean scissors to open the carton.

When reheating a beaker or bottle never leave it warming for more than 15 minutes. Warm the feed in a bottle warmer or place in a container of warm water. Don’t use a microwave to warm a bottle or beaker as it unevenly heats the feed and may burn your baby’s mouth. Shake the bottle or beaker before giving it to your baby so there are no hot spots and remember to always test the temperature on your wrist first too. If it feels hot, it’s too hot for your little one.

Do not add extra powder or water to make the feeds stronger or weaker and do not press the powder into the scoop. Using too much or too little powder could make your baby ill. Remember to throw away any feeds that have not been used within 2 hours. Made up milk can be poured over cereals or mixed with food, however never add any food to the milk in your baby’s beaker/bottle.

Attention

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

SMA Follow-on Milk is only suitable for babies over 6 months as part of a mixed diet. It should not be used as a substitute for breast milk during the first 6 months of life. The decision to start weaning or to use follow-on milk before 6 months, should be made only on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist, based on your baby’s specific growth and development needs.
