The signs of lactose intolerance can include abdominal pain, wind, loose stools, and poor weight gain or weight loss. It can last up to a few days or a few weeks - if you think your baby may be lactose intolerant it’s best to consult your GP.

SMA LF formula benefits from over 90 years of experience in advancing baby nutrition and has been designed specifically for the dietary management of primary and secondary lactose intolerance. The formula is nutritionally complete for up to 6 months of age, so your baby will receive all the nutrients needed for growth and development – only without the lactose which may be upsetting their tummy.

SMA LF is also suitable for older infants & young children, in conjunction with solid food, up to 18 months of age. SMA LF tastes the same as other SMA infant milks, so your baby shouldn’t notice a difference when you switch back to their usual infant milk.

Why SMA Lactose Free Formula?

Nutritionally complete tailored formula

SMA LF is scientifically developed to meet the specific nutritional needs of babies less than 6 months with proven lactose intolerance.

Omega 3 & 6 LCPs (Long Chain Polyunsaturates)

LCPs are important components of cell membranes and play a key role in the development of the brain, eye, and nervous system. Although LCPs can be made in the body, babies have a high demand for these nutrients. SMA LF contains Omega 3 & 6 LCPs to help ensure bottle-fed babies aren't missing out on these important nutrients.

Fortified with iron to help brain development

Iron is very important for growth and brain development. SMA LF is fortified with iron, which helps brain development.

Preparing your baby’s feed - powders. Product details

Whilst SMA products are made under strict hygienic conditions, they are not sterile. Make sure you follow these instructions on preparation and storage, or you could make your baby ill.

Wash hands well. Sterilise all utensils according to manufacturers' instructions.  After 6 months, if you are using a beaker it is not necessary to sterilise equipment, though you should ensure everything is fully cleaned.

Boil kettle filled with fresh tap water. Allow boiled water to cool for no more than 30 minutes before measuring the required amount of water (see feeding guide on can) into the sterilised bottle, carefully - the water is hot. Do not use artificially softened water or repeatedly boiled water.

Using the scoop provided in the can, add the correct number of scoops of powder (see feeding guide on can), levelling off each scoop with the back of a clean dry knife. Replace plastic lid on can.

Place the sterilised teat and cap on the bottle or lid on the beaker and shake well. Cool bottle or beaker  under cold running water until lukewarm. Test temperature by shaking a few drops onto the inside of your wrist.

If advance preparation is necessary, consult your healthcare professional.

Breast milk is best for babies. This product must be used under medical supervision. SMA LF is a lactose-free milk based formula for the dietary management of babies and young children who are intolerant to lactose or sucrose, or who are suffering from symptoms such as diarrhoea, tummy ache or wind caused by temporary lactose intolerance. It is suitable as the sole source of nutrition for babies up to 6 months of age, and in conjunction with solid food, for babies and young children up to 18 months of age. SMA LF is not suitable for those who are allergic to cows’ milk protein, or who suffer from galactosaemia or require a galactose free diet.
